Christmas 2014

Another year just about over: Another Christmas is upon us.  This is my most favorite time of the year.  Lots of memories of Christmases long ago and some not so long ago, all come to mind, all of them special to me.

Last night I got to do something I think would be very pleasing to my mother.  I attended a Christmas Eve service at The Nancy’s dad’s church.  It is the first time I have done this in at least fifty years or more, and the irony of it is, I loved it.  The service, too, brought back memories of past Christmas Seasons – the singing of Carols, the season itself, and being with a group of people full of the Christmas spirit of peace and love.

The grandchildren are getting older.  The piles of toys have given way to piles of clothing as gifts from their parents.  No longer is the floor littered with tiny parts from the myriad of toys that used to cover it entirely, and also gone is the tug-of-wars that broke out of a toy desired by two or more of the boys.  Christmases with the four of them are a little more subdued…almost to the point of being boring (but a nice boring).  These days we can actually carry on a conversation with them, an adult conversation, or one pretty darn close to it.

This past weekend we got to celebrate the Season with the Richmond, VA contingent of our family at The Farm.  It was fun holding off the kids from opening of presents from their arrival on Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.  We all loved it as the intrigue heightened, the kids, not so much.

Later this afternoon we will load The Nancy’s dad in the car and cart him off to have a family dinner with the Bridgeport, WV contingent – four of the grandchildren, their mom and stepfather.  The Nancy’s dad loves to be around the kids.  These days three of the four tower over old dad.  It is kind of a neat thing to watch them as they interact.
Christmas is my favorite time of the year, a time when I get to eat lots of junk food and not worry about the calories, the sugar or the salt content.  Maybe, just maybe, this is why Christmas is my most favorite time of the year.

Merry Christmas to all!
All that is all I have to say about that…
