From Cradle to Graduation in 15 minutes…

05/26/2013

Or so it seems.

Our granddaughter, actually my step-granddaughter to be politically correct, is a member of the 2013 Graduating Class of the Bridgeport High School, Bridgeport, WV, and in what I know will seem like another few minutes we will get to see her walk across a stage at West Virginia University and receive her degree in nursing…and so it goes.  The graduation ceremony was held outdoors yesterday in the high school’s stadium.  As the students marched in I spotted Jessica and at that moment a torrent of beautiful memories flashed before me.

Wasn’t it just yesterday this sweet little girl came into our lives?  She was days old, then months, then years, then a decade, in no time at all a teenager, and now in the waning years of her teens, a high school graduate.  It was just a few days ago a six-year old Jessica crawled up into my lap, put her arms around my neck and said, “I love you, Dave.”  She stole my heart that day; she is a special, a very special, kid.

It was pretty neat to see her in her white cap and gown yesterday with her gold Honor Society sash draped over her shoulders as she stood between her mother and grandmother and I snapped photos of them, their beaming, prideful smiles melted my heart.  I am so proud of the woman she is becoming it was hard for me to hold back tears.  Have I mentioned she is an awesome kid?

I constantly tell young parents to cherish every moment with their babies.  To tell them every day how much they are loved and to hug them every chance they get.  The distance between birth and graduation is short, very, very short.  It passes at the speed of light.  Somewhere recently I must have blinked a little too long, for in that brief moment my sweet little Jessica I used cradle to my shoulder with two hands has grown in to a competent young woman with a huge future in front of her.  I am happy and excited for her and already wondering if her college graduation will be indoors or outdoors.

And that is all I have to say about that…
